Activate the Alley
The Activate the Alley project seeks to impart the stories of historic buildings, murals, and structures in the Collierville Historic District, as well as to enhance the alleyways around the Town Square.
The first project will be located at 100 E. Mulberry St. (Bank Tennessee) on the northwest corner of the street. Collierville’s Historic Design Commission has approved 3 panels to be placed between the first 4 windows on the alley side of the building. The panels will be an artist rendering of Grace’s Beauty Shop, which was previously located in the building decades before. This is an ongoing project, with Grace’s Beauty Shop being the first of a series representing the Historic District of Collierville. This ongoing project will be funded by grants, donations and Main Street Collierville’s designated preservation fund. Acknowledgement for funding/donations will be in the voiceover linked to the OR codes. The project will enhance the alleyways and will be a wonderful photo stop for residents and visitors alike.
The project is a collaboration between the property owners Town Square Partners, the Main Street Collierville Activate the Alley Committee, The Collierville Arts Council, and the Main Street Collierville Design Committee. The panels will be made of ACM (Aluminum Composite Material), and each panel will measure 4 feet X 6 feet. The panels will be attached to the building with galvanized nuts and bolts. Lighting will be installed over each panel to visually enhance and welcome visitors to the alley.
Historical Walking Tour
Main Street Collierville will also partner with Kellum Creek Business Solutions to provide support in creating a website which creates informational content for historical buildings via QR codes. These QR codes would provide context on the history of each building, murals, and panels, creating a history walking tour on the buildings selected. This will teach the audience about the history of Collierville, and encourage a love of our local art.
The MSC board of directors feels that these ongoing projects will instill a sense of community pride. They will also create a larger economic vitality base, promote tourism, and improve our Historic Districts brand.
